Certification Courses

It's often described as detoxification. In physiological terms, the lymphatic system carries excess fluid, proteins, and cellular waste from the tissues back toward circulation, and the lymph nodes filter that fluid along the way. Hands-on work supports that process. A session is also calming, because the LINFA™ Method is paced to settle the nervous system. We teach the physiology so you can explain what the work does in plain terms.

We recommend you start with a structured course taught in person, where an instructor can watch your hands and help you shape your technique. At Toronto Lymphatic Academy, that course is Level 1 Foundation MLD Training, two days in downtown Toronto, with theory and demonstration on the first day and supervised practice on the second. Participants practice on each other, and the founders correct each person's technique one-on-one. You can start treating in your own practice as soon as you feel confident with the steps.

Toronto Lymphatic Academy runs its group courses at Hotel Victoria in downtown Toronto. Level 1 courses run every month. Students often travel from across Ontario and Canada to attend. Teams anywhere in Ontario can also book a private lymphatic drainage course on site.

Level 1 is a two-day intensive, 10 am to 6 pm both days, with pre-course study materials to read beforehand. You're OK to start practicing MLD on completion. Level 1 Foundation MLD Training runs roughly once a month, so you can pick dates that suit your schedule. Certification from TLA happens after you also complete our Functional Lymphatics, Peri-Op & Fascial Care, and Glymphatics trainings.

Level 1 Foundation MLD Training is $2,288 plus HST, including lunch both days and the pre-course study materials. You can pay with Klarna at checkout if you’d like to pay in installments. Our refund, cancellation, and transfer terms are set out in full in a plain-language agreement you'll receive when you register.

You'll join a private mentorship group where you can have your questions answered and get advice on tricky situations for as long as you practice. Once you've been treating for a while, you might also consider the LINFA™ Refinement Lab, a day of live demonstrations and individual feedback. When you're ready to go further, the three advanced courses lead to the Lymphatic Drainage Specialist Certificate: Functional Lymphatics, Peri-Op & Fascial Care, and Glymphatics.

Some lymphatic drainage programs ask for a professional healthcare background before you enroll, but our Level 1 has no prerequisites, and you don't need prior experience with lymphatic work. The teaching is clinical, so we recommend refreshing your anatomy and physiology beforehand. (The pre-course study materials can help with that). The course is suitable for massage therapists, naturopathic doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists, osteopathic practitioners, RPNs, PSWs, nutritionists, and aestheticians, whether they work in clinical or wellness settings.

In Ontario, manual lymphatic drainage is not a regulated modality, but training still matters, especially with patients who have complex conditions. A good course teaches the contraindications, meaning the situations where lymphatic work isn't appropriate or needs clearance first, and how to adjust treatment for someone with post-surgical edema or someone who is pregnant. Some liability insurers ask for proof of training before they cover lymphatic treatments. If you hold a regulated designation, as registered massage therapists and naturopathic doctors do, your college's professional standards also apply to how you offer and advertise the work.

Lymphatic massage is a specialized form of therapeutic massage, used in both manual therapy and spa settings. Manual lymphatic drainage techniques generally use light pressure because the vessels sit so close to the skin, and the LINFA™ Method calibrates that pressure to the tissue so the client can feel the work. Registered massage therapists, aestheticians, naturopathic doctors, and others add lymphatic therapy to an existing hands-on practice through a course like Level 1. In Ontario, the title "massage therapist" is protected, so if you aren't an RMT, describe the service in terms your own designation allows.

The Lymphatic Drainage Specialist Certificate is available from the Toronto Lymphatic Academy. You'll earn it by completing Level 1 and all three advanced courses: Functional Lymphatics, Peri-Op & Fascial Care, and Glymphatics. Level 1 comes first, and the advanced courses can follow in any order, except Glymphatics, which needs Functional Lymphatics first. You can take them close together or spread them out and keep treating in between. Note: If you're a regulated professional, we advise that you check how your college lets you use the word "specialist" in your advertising.

Certified lymphedema therapists are trained to treat lymphedema, a kind of chronic swelling that needs medical management. Their certification centers on Complete Decongestive Therapy and usually takes 135 hours or more through a specialized lymphedema program. In Canada, each of those programs sets its own entry requirements, and they often look for registered massage therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, or other regulated health professionals.

Toronto Lymphatic Academy doesn't offer that kind of certification because our courses teach MLD for wellness, post-surgical, and chronic inflammation clients.

Level 1 with TLA gives you a working knowledge of the lymphatic system's anatomy and the nervous system reasoning behind the techniques. If you choose to go on to a lymphedema program, you'll arrive with that foundation in place. And even if you don't, you'll already have a skill you can use with the people on your table.

Some programs are offered online or in a hybrid format, and some online programs issue a digital certificate after video lessons alone. Unfortunately, we usually advise against these kinds of programs. We teach in person because manual lymph drainage is learned through the hands, and working on the correct pressure, pacing, and positioning needs an instructor in the room.

The Vodder method is the right training for lymphedema, whereas the Brazilian lymphatic drainage style is the right training for sculpting. The LINFA™ Method is what we built for everyone in between: results that your client can feel, the reasoning that lies underneath everything you do, and a method that is easier on your own hands. Thaís is trained in both traditions, in Brazil under Renata França and at Dr. Vodder's International School. Our LINFA™ method draws on both while putting the nervous system first.

Yes. Level 1 has no prerequisite. Many aestheticians have trained with us, and one of our founders is an aesthetician. The course teaches the anatomy properly, so you understand what you're doing, and it covers how to add this service to a spa or wellness menu and how to position and price it. MLD isn't a regulated modality, so insurance billing depends on your own designation. A spa service grows through results and referrals.
